Near real time satellite imagery products now available
Geoscience Australia is now able to process data from the Landsat 7, Landsat 8, TERRA and AQUA immediately after each satellite overpass. The satellite data is downlinked at Geoscience Australia’s Alice Springs ground station and processed at Geoscience Australia in Canberra.
Once processed, the images and hotspots are publicly available as ‘near real time’ products through a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) download. The datasets are released under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia licence and include:
- Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 imagery (at 25m resolution, processed to level 1T)
- MODIS imagery (processed to surface reflectance level); and
- Hotspots extracted from MODIS and AVHRR imagery (as point files providing position, temperature, time, and confidence level for each observation).
Images are generally available 3-6 hours after satellite overpass and hotspots within 30 minutes.
The near-real-time products are expected to be most useful in situations where it is important to have up to date information, including floods, fires, ship groundings, oil spills or similar events.
