What to do if You Need Help With Airborne Surveys

If you are having problems contact the Airborne Surveys Administrator at Geoscience Australia. Details are as follows:

    or via email - murray.richardson@ga.gov.au

  3. Airborne Survey Search
  4. Click on Query the database and the main Airborne Surveys Query/Map window will display (Figure 1).

There are two ways to search Airborne Surveys. Either:

Use the Query window (left) side of the screen

    Or

Use the Map window (right) side of the screen

Figure 1. Airborne Surveys Query/Map window.

  5. Query Window (Left) Side of Screen
  6. There are no mandatory fields in the Query window. You can fill in as many or as few fields as needed. If the Submit button is clicked with no fields entered, then a list of all surveys will be displayed in the Results window.

Entire or part names can be used in the Survey Name field. For example, entering WA into the Survey Name field will search for all surveys beginning with, or containing the letters WA. Alternatively, if the entire name is typed into the field only one survey should be displayed in the Results window (unless more than one survey has that name).

The following notes briefly describe each of the fields available to refine your search:

Project: Each survey held in the National Airborne Geophysical Database is catalogued by a GA project number. This is the primary reference.

State: The state, or territory covered by the survey.

Data Types: The type of data recorded on the survey.

Acquired After: Entering a date (DD-MON-YYYY) in this field will retrieve all surveys that had data acquisition completed after the entered date

Acquired Before: Entering a date (DD-MON-YYYY) in this field will retrieve all surveys that had data acquisition completed before the entered date

Line Space Min: The line separation in metres. Entering a number in this field will retrieve all surveys flown with a line spacing less than or equal to the entered value.

Line Space Max: Entering a number in this field allows for the retrieval of surveys flown between Line Space Min and Line Space Max. This field also allows to retrieve surveys that have two different line spacings.

North Latitude: The Northern co-ordinate of a minimum bounding rectangle which encompasses the survey.

South Latitude: The Southern co-ordinate of a minimum bounding rectangle which encompasses the survey.

Note: Negative latitudes for the southern hemisphere are taken care of when the query is submitted. Only enter positive numbers in the latitude boxes.

West Longitude: The Western co-ordinate of a minimum bounding rectangle which encompasses the survey.

East Longitude: The Eastern co-ordinate of a minimum bounding rectangle which encompasses the survey.

1:250k Map Name: Selecting a map name from the drop-down list will retieve surveys that cover or partially cover the selected map sheet.

Sort results by: Choose the required field from the drop-down list to further assist your query. This drop-down list is located above the Submit button. Options available are:

Survey Name: Query results are sorted by survey name in alphabetical order.

Project Decreasing: Query results are sorted by project in decreasing survey number order.

Project Increasing: Query results are sorted by project in increasing survey number order.

State: Query results are sorted by state in alphabetical order.

Start Date: Query results are sorted by start date in order from most recently flown survey to oldest flown survey.

    Example

    1. Select Tasmania from the State drop-down menu
    2. Select Mag from the Data Types text box
    3. Enter 01-JAN-1980 in the Acquired After text box
    4. Select Project Decreasing from the Sort results by drop-down menu
    5. Click on Submit

All Tasmanian surveys that recorded Magnetic data after 1 January 1980 will be displayed in the Results window. The results will be sorted by decreasing project number.

Click on the Clear button to begin a new search.

  7. Map Window (Right) Side of Screen
  8. This window enables you to select surveys by dragging a box with the mouse over the area of interest on the map. You can use the navigation keys of this window to define a search area. Surveys can only be selected from a user defined area. Notes on the function of each navigation key will be displayed when the mouse is moved over the keys, they include:

    • zoom into an area
    • zoom out
    • centre map
    • information on surveys within an area

All chosen surveys will appear in the Results window.

Two drop-down lists are provided to display only a subset of all surveys. Details on how to use these lists follows.

Pick a line spacing has the following options:

    • All
    • <=400m
    • >400m
    • Clear

All will display all surveys that have survey boundary polygons.

<=400m will display those surveys that have a line spacing less than or equal to 400 metres.

    >400m will display those surveys that have a line spacing greater than 400 metres.

Clear will remove all surveys from the display that have a particular line spacing criteria.

Once your selection has been made from the Pick a line spacing list, the map of Australia will be automatically updated with your selection.

Pick an operator has the following options:

    • Clear
    • All
    • Federal Govt
    • State Govt
    • Joint
    • Commercial

Clear will remove all surveys from the display that have a particular operator criteria.

All will display all surveys that have survey boundary polygons.

Federal Govt will display those surveys that have been acquired by the Federal Government.

State Govt will display those surveys that been acquired by Australian State or Territory Governments.

Joint will display those surveys that have been acquired either by Federal/State Governments or State Government(s)/Commercial.

Commercial will display those surveys that have been acquired by private companies.

Once your selection has been made from the Pick an operator list, the map of Australia will be automatically updated with your selection.

  9. Results Window (Bottom) of Screen

Click on the required Survey Name, for example, South West Tasmania, TAS, 2001 and the Survey Details window (Figure 2) will display the detailed results for that survey. If Map is selected the survey will appear in red on the Australian map showing the location of the survey.
