2.7.1.1 Example 1

Location of Example: 148o13'51" East, 34o09'06" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • The regularity of the piggery buildings that appear as rectangular elevated features evident by shadow signature.
  • The effluent settling ponds in proximity to the buildings.
Regional Considerations:

2.7.1.2 Example 2

Location of Example: 146o46'15" East, 34o46'01" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • The regularity of the piggery buildings that appear as rectangular elevated features evident by shadow signature. The buildings are normally tightly bunched.
  • The effluent settling ponds are generally in close proximity to the buildings.
Regional Considerations:
  • This form of Intensive Animal Production is generally found within agricultural and pastoral farming lands.

2.7.1.3 Example 3

Location of Example: 150o45'56" East, 31o03'07" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • Poultry Farms have the regularity of the more elongated buildings that appear as rectangular elevated features evident by shadow signature.
  • In addition, there is the absence of settling ponds that are evident with other Intensive Animal Production (IAP) facilities such as piggeries and cattle farms.
Regional Considerations:

2.7.1.4 Example 4

Location of Example: 150o19'54" East, 31o08'58" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • Poultry Farms have the regularity of the more elongated buildings that appear as rectangular elevated features evident by shadow signature.
  • In addition, there is the absence of settling ponds that are evident with other Intensive Animal Production (IAP) facilities such as piggeries and cattle farms.

2.7.1.5 Example 5

Location of Example: 149o20'42" East, 28o31'07" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • In intensive cattle feedlots, feedlots are evenly spaced, many have shade shelters to protect cattle from high UV or heat. These shades shelters are not permanent structures and should not be captured.
  • Intensive cattle feedlots will have effluent settling ponds in proximity to the Intensive Animal Production (IAP) facility.
Regional Considerations:
  • Generally associated with pastoral land, edges of populated centres or centres of cattle trade such as ports.

2.7.1.6 Example 6

Location of Example: 149o20'42" East, 28o31'07" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • In intensive cattle feedlots, feedlots are evenly spaced, many have shade shelters to protect cattle from high UV or heat. These shades shelters are not permanent structures and should not be captured.
  • Intensive cattle feedlots will have effluent settling ponds in proximity to the Intensive Animal Production (IAP) facility.

2.7.1.7 Example 7

Location of Example: 118o00'34" East, 34o29'30" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • Figure 2.7.1.7 shows a free range piggery, where part of the layout is circular to enable groups of pigs to be rotated at minimum stress to the pigs and operators.
  • Shade shelters are visible in each of the paddocks. These are not permanent structures and may be moved over time.
  • A central handling area is present in the hub of the paddocks spread around the circle layout.
  • Access lanes are present, leading to the centre hub of the circular layout and along the centre of the rectangular paddocks

2.7.1.8 Example 8

Location of Example: 148o53'45" East, 33o04'48" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • Poultry Farms have the regularity of the more elongated buildings that appear as rectangular elevated features evident by shadow signature.
  • In addition, there is the absence of settling ponds that are evident with other Intensive Animal Production (IAP) facilities such as piggeries and cattle farms.

2.7.1.10 Example 10

Location of Example: 150o53'32" East, 30o44'26" South
Distinctive Characteristics:
  • The regularity of the more elongated buildings that appear as rectangular elevated features evident by shadow signature.
  • The absence of settling ponds that are evident with other Intensive Animal Production (IAP) facilities such as piggeries and cattle farms.
  • In Figure 2.7.1.10 cleared/dirt patches are also evident.
  • Cleared/dirt patches do not exhibit any shadow signature and should not be captured mistakenly as a Building.
  • Dirt patches within Poultry Farms could possibly be used for various purposes including; future expansion of the facility, stockpiling, storage of effluent, grains storage or chicken feed storage.
