Geoscience Australia is on the look-out for photos with rock-star qualities, with entries now open for the 2015 Top GeoShot photographic competition. The theme for this year's competition is "Rock Stars".

Geoscience Australia's CEO Dr Chris Pigram said he wanted people to head outdoors to experience and capture Australia's amazing and unique geology and geography.

"We want you to find, and photograph what we feel are some of Australia's biggest rock stars," Dr Pigram added.

Entry to the Top GeoShot competition is open to all members of the Australian public and encourages everyone to start taking photos that capture images of rock features and formations in the Australian landscape.

The winning entries in 2014 included the amazing Top GeoShot of Gibraltar Falls in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) taken by Mark Jekabsons from Canberra. Mr Jekabsons described his photo as 'late afternoon on a rainy day looking down the valley from the top of the falls'.

The student winner was a magical photo of Cathedral Rocks in Kiama taken by Callum Porter; and the People's Choice was a photo titled 'Remote Office' taken by David Pyle of a geologist working under the stars in outback Australia.

Entries for the 2015 competition close on 1 September, with three categories available: Open (18 year plus), Intermediate (13-17 years) and Junior (12 years and under). For competition details, including how to submit your photo, go to our Top GeoShot page.

Photographs will be judged on their quality, creativity, aesthetics and how well they fit with the competition theme. Winners will receive a professionally framed enlargement of their image and a copy of Shaping a Nation: a Geology of Australia. The winners will be announced during Earth Science Week celebrations in October.
