Opportunity to explore the wonders of geoscience
Canberrans can learn about the science behind Pokémon GO - and catch a few as well - this coming Sunday at Geoscience Australia's 2016 Open Day.
This free family-friendly event is the highlight of the ACT's National Science Week celebrations. It showcases the various ways that geoscience impacts on the everyday lives of Australians.
Come along to find out how precious metals and minerals make smart phones work, why Australia has moved north by 1.5 metres and how earthquakes are detected.
Fun hands-on activities will include panning for gold and erupting volcanoes. Anyone who brings along a rock from home can have it identified by Geoscience Australia's geologists.
Chief Executive Officer Dr Chris Pigram said Open Day is a unique opportunity for the Canberra community to learn about the diverse - and sometimes strange - work that we do.
"One of our priorities is improving the accuracy of positioning information - the information that supports Pokémon GO and that will be essential for an array of future technologies, including driverless cars", Dr Pigram explained.
"By showcasing our work we hope to inspire some of our younger visitors to become tomorrow¿s geoscientists."
"Our scientists are excited about the chance to show the critical role we play in helping Australia to respond to the major economic, social and environmental challenges that our nation faces."
Geoscience Australia is the nation's trusted adviser on the geology and geography of Australia.
When: Sunday 21 August, 10am - 3pm.
