Community safety sectors International development

Last updated:18 June 2024

Every sector we work with is managing the rapid acceleration of knowledge and capabilities within community safety. We help our collaborators navigate this growth by providing the data, tools, applications, and guidance needed to prepare for the future.

Our work in international development is through the Australian Government overseas aid program to assist our Asia-Pacific neighbours in preventing new risk and reducing existing disaster risks. We contribute by providing preeminent science, data and technology to support evidence informed decision making aligned to the four priorities for action set out in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Working together

Our community safety team collaborate to:

  • Strengthen the monitoring of hazards and improve warning systems
  • Build capability in-country to quantify hazard, exposure and vulnerability to improve preparedness, response and recovery actions, and to demonstrate the benefits of mitigation
  • Reduce future disaster risk by “Building back better” and guiding future development to be fit for the hazard environment
  • Support community awareness and engagement
