Welcome to Digital Earth Antarctica

Synthetic Aperture Radar backscatter from Sentinel-1A over the Publications Ice Shelf, East Antarctica. Lighter colours indicate higher backscatter, while darker colours represent areas of lower backscatter.

Digital Earth Antarctica is dedicated to enhancing the digital presence of Antarctic Earth Observation (EO) satellite data. Our mission is to provide open access to pre-processed EO data, enabling comprehensive analysis and monitoring of the Antarctic region.

Our vision

Digital Earth Antarctica aims to be a globally trusted source of EO information for Antarctica. By leveraging the power of Open Data Cube technology, we aim to offer free access to trusted EO Antarctic data, supporting scientific research, enhancing environmental outcomes and supporting data-informed decision making.

Key features

  • Analysis Ready Data: Digital Earth Antarctica aims to provide open and easy access to the vast collection of satellite imagery from the Landsat and Sentinel-1 and -2 series. Data will be pre-processed for Antarctic conditions, lowering the barrier to Antarctic research.
  • Continental Timeseries Processing: Building on the foundational infrastructure of Digital Earth Australia, Digital Earth Antarctica extends its capabilities to the Antarctic context, enabling users to conduct continental-scale time-series analysis.
  • Community Engagement: We are committed to building strong partnerships and engaging with stakeholders to improve the quality of EO data and ensuring the development of relevant products. We're engaging with users through regular meetings, joint projects, and shared resources.

Benefits

  • Environmental Analysis: Track changes in sea ice, ice sheets, and the Southern Ocean to understand the impacts of climate change.
  • Scientific Research: Support biodiversity studies, glacier dynamics, and environmental change monitoring.
  • Policy Support: Provide EO data to support Australia's scientific interests and Treaty obligations in Antarctica.
