Space Earth observation and our Digital Earth

One of the key elements of our work is making space data easy to access. We are removing technical barriers for Australian consumers and businesses to take advantage of Earth observation (EO) information. Doing so helps drive the estimated $2.5 billion contribution EO makes to the Australian economy each year.
Our EO data is already helping Australian communities, industries and governments better understand environmental conditions such as:
- soil and coastal erosion
- impacts of land management practices
- deforestation and desertification
- urban development
- water availability.
With our openly available data and tools, everyone has the ability to observe, analyse and map the Australian landscape, cities and even individual paddocks.
Our Digital Earth programs provide open access to Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and products, Open Data Cubes and Data Collections. We are helping to unlock the power of EO data for Australia and our international partners, providing information that covers more regions.
We’re also building international capabilities. Through the Digital Earth Africa program, we’re supporting the gathering and analysis of EO data in Africa, which is essential to decision making for community development, digital transformation and sustainable management of land and water.
Our Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub, in support of the European Copernicus Programme, provides free, open, trusted and reliable access to Sentinel satellite data for Australasia, South-East Asia, the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Australian Antarctic Territory. It provides Sentinel-1, -2, -3 and 5P mission products, from the beginning of the mission to the current date within 12 hours of satellite overpass for government and scientific research purposes.

Why Earth observation matters to Australia
Space provides a unique vantage point from which to observe the changing Earth. Earth observation satellites enable us to observe large areas in great detail, on a regular basis, over long periods of time.

Landsat Next partnership
Geoscience Australia is a leading Commonwealth Government agency in ensuring Australia’s access to crucial Earth observation data under the United States-Australia Landsat Next Partnership.
